Admissions Policy

Musashino Academia Musicae seeks individuals who embrace the university’s founding spirit of “‘Wa’ (Harmony)” and its educational principles of “the Cultivation of Musical Artistry” and “Character Formation.” Through our admissions process, we select those who, in addition to sharing these values, possess the following qualities:

1. Individuals who demonstrate a sincere commitment to pursuing advanced knowledge and skills in the field of musical arts.
2. Individuals who possess a broad perspective and the qualities necessary to engage in creative performance and research activities.
3. Individuals who exhibit a richness of character befitting those who study under the university’s founding spirit and educational principles.

2027 Graduate School of Music Admissions Guidelines (Master’s Program / Doctoral Program)（2.5 MB） 

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Hold a master’s or professional degree or be expected to earn one by March 2027.
2. Have been awarded a degree in a foreign country equivalent to a master’s or professional degree or be expected to be awarded one by March 2027.
3. Have completed in Japan a distance-learning program offered by a foreign educational institution and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a master’s or professional degree or be expected to be awarded one by March 2027.
4. Have completed in Japan a program at a foreign educational institution designated by MEXT* as equivalent to a foreign graduate school and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a master’s or professional degree or be expected to be awarded one by March 2027.
   *MEXT: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan
5. Have completed a program at the United Nations University and have been awarded a degree equivalent to a master’s degree or be expected to be awarded one by March 2027.
6. Have graduated from a university or equivalent institution, engaged in research at a university, research institute, or equivalent institution for at least two years, and been recognized by the Graduate School of Musashino Academia Musicae as having academic ability equivalent to or greater than that of a master’s degree holder based on their research achievements.
7. Be at least 24 years of age and have been recognized by the Graduate School of Musashino Academia Musicae, through an individual eligibility assessment, as possessing academic ability equivalent to or greater than that of a person holding a master’s or professional degree.
   *Applicants applying under criteria 6 or 7 must undergo an individual eligibility assessment in advance. Please contact the Admissions Office and confirm the required documents before submitting them with the prescribed application form by Friday, December 11, 2026.
8. Applicants of foreign nationality must meet one of criteria 1–7 above and have passed the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1.

Examination Schedule and Venue

• Examination Dates: February 27 and 28, 2027
• Examination Venue: Musashino Academia Musicae, Ekoda Campus
• Exam subjects: Foreign languages, tests specific to research areas, oral examinations, interviews.
• Application Period:
  • Online Application: From 10:00 on January 25 to 23:59 on February 1, 2027 (JST).
  • Application by Mail: Application documents must be postmarked on or after January 25 and received by February 3, 2027.
• Announcement of Results: March 3, 2027
